Quote:Will Keane and Luke Giverin earned United's Reserves a deserved 2-0 victory in the Manchester Senior Cup final to wrap up a successful season for Warren Joyce's side.

United kept a fifth clean sheet in succession and lifted a second trophy in a matter of weeks after winning the national prize by defeating Aston Villa on penalties last week.

The Reds were the better side in the first half with Robbie Brady prominent in terms of efforts on goal. The Republic of Ireland youngster fired wide after a neat move culminating in a Will Keane pass and miscued a driven cross by Davide Petrucci. After Denis Suarez’s attempt for City cleared the bar, Brady’s free-kick forced a sprawling save out of Eirik Johansen and the former Hull City loanee then lifted a shot over the top.

So it was no surprise when United broke through on 27 minutes. Petrucci’s through ball released Will Keane and Johansen was unable to keep out the top scorer’s shot, with the ball squirting under his dive and into the net.

Gai Assulin caused a rare moment of discomfort when he tricked his way past Marnick Vermijl but the ball deflected off Michael Keane to Ben Amos. Most of the action was at the other end with Jesse Lingard flashing a volley wide following some majestic play by the excellent Petrucci. Lingard was then frustrated at what looked to be a harsh flag for offside when he would have been clear on goal.

The Barclays Premier Reserves League champions were quick out of the blocks in the second half with Lingard volleying just wide after Petrucci spotted a bold run forward by Vermijl. Another move of real quality should have doubled the lead but Paul Pogba could only find Johansen's legs with his finish following impressive work by Will Keane. Another exquisite build-up led to Ezekiel Fryers crossing for Will Keane to head off target.

But United were unable to get the second goal some enterprising play merited and, instead, City started to enjoy more possession. Amos was still largely untroubled as he comfortably fielded a free-kick by Denis Suarez after Fryers was harshly booked for a foul.

Amos fisted away one cross from the lively Jeremy Helan and Michael Keane managed to stand firm on a couple of occasions, once getting a crucial touch with substitute Jordi Hiwula threatening but Will Keane, ploughing a lone furrow in attack, kept the City defenders on their toes.

And the striker managed to get his pass away to late sub Giverin in stoppage time, with the youngster running through and clipping his finish inside the far post just as he was being closed down by the defenders in hot pursuit. It was a fitting end to a fabulous campaign for United's second string, who have been a joy to watch all season. Even a pitch invasion failed to take any gloss off the occasion.

United: Amos; Vermijl (Giverin 89), Keane, Wootton, Fryers; Brady (Fornasier 82), Tunnicliffe, Pogba, Petrucci (Thorpe 70), Lingard; W.Keane. Sub not used: Johnstone.

The 32-year-old's deal expires this summer and he will be available on a free transfer after three years at Old Trafford.

Owen has not featured for United since November due to a thigh injury with the former Liverpool and Newcastle man only making four appearances all season.

The striker scored three times in those four appearances, with the goals coming in the Carling Cup victories over Leeds and Aldershot.

Owen joined Manchester United on a free transfer from Newcastle in the summer of 2009 and went on to score 17 goals in 52 appearances for the club.
Next move
Owen revealed he was informed of the decision after this week's testomonial match for former United hero Harry Gregg and he admits he loved his spell at Old Trafford.

The former England international wrote on Twitter said: "The manager informed me after our testimonial match on Tuesday that the club would not be offering me a new contract.
"I have loved every minute of the three years I have spent at such a fantastic club.

"I now plan to have a short holiday during which I will contemplate my next move."
United confirmed the news on their website in a statement which added: "Manchester United thanks Michael for his contribution and wishes him well for the future."

Quote:Leicester have completed the signings of Ritchie De Laet and Matty James from Manchester United on three-year contracts.

As revealed by Sky Sports on Monday, Belgian defender De Laet, 23, and English midfielder James, 20, will move to the King Power Stadium.

De Laet had a loan spell with Norwich last season which was terminated early in January after previous short-term stints at Sheffield United, Preston and Portsmouth.

He made just six first-team appearances for United following a surprise move from Stoke in 2009.

Former England Under-19 captain James did not make a first-team breakthrough at Old Trafford.

He spent two loan spells at Preston in 2010 but was troubled by injury in the season just ended.

Leicester manager Nigel Pearson told his club's official website: "Ritchie and Matthew are both players we have been monitoring for some time and we are very pleased to be able to bring them both to the club.

"Both are hungry, young players with winning mentalities, experience of Championship football and a desire to be successful."

I thought De Laet showed promise when he first joined, but never really lived up to that promise. Struggled at Norwich and then picked up an injury.

Didn't really see much of James, as he was on loan, too last season.

Good luck to them both.

Quote:Former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, 35, has announced his retirement from football.

The Dutchman had been playing with Spanish side Malaga but endured a difficult season, scoring only five times in 35 games.

His contract had been coming to an end and he made his last appearance in the Andalucian outfit's 1-0 win over Gijon.

"I've played my last match in my professional career," he said upon quitting the sport.

"I wanted to play in the Champions League, but it is the moment to leave.

"I have arrived at my physical limit and I can't play at the maximum level. I couldn't have had a better send-off than this.

"I feel happy that I am the one taking this decision. I would like to thank Malaga, the technical and medical staff for an unforgettable year.

"I am proud to have won collective and individual titles, but my greatest satisfaction was to be able to work day after day, year after year."

DID YOU KNOW?
Van Nistelrooy made 70 appearances for the Dutch national side, scoring 35 goals.

He started his professional career with Dutch side Den Bosch, where he spent four years, before moving on to Heerenveen.

The following year earned him a transfer to Eredivisie giants PSV Eindhoven, where he made his name, winning the league title twice and establishing himself in the Netherlands national side.

Van Nistelrooy looked set to join Manchester United in 2000-01, but Sir Alex Ferguson called off the transfer due to issues with the striker's fitness. Within days, he broke down in training with ruptured cruciate knee ligaments.

But after making a full recovery, Ferguson came knocking the following summer and Van Nistelrooy signed for the Red Devils in a £19m deal.

He became a fans' favourite at Old Trafford, bagging 150 goals in 219 games, including 95 in the Premier League, winning the league title, FA Cup and League Cup.

After five successful seasons, he moved to Real Madrid where he won another two league titles, before spells at Hamburg and Malaga.

A fantastic player and a great United player. I'm sure we will all want to wish him well in his retirement.

Manchester United look to have already started their summer business with the sale of two youngsters to Leicester City. The Mirror say a combined deal was agreed on Friday night for Matty James and Ritchie De Laet with the fee said to be about £2m.

Ritchie De Laet joined Manchester United in 2009 from Stoke City and the Staffordshire club will get a chunk of the transfer fee. He never really managed to get a chance at United and faced a lot of competition for his full back role. Injuries haven't helped the 23 year old's progression and a permanent move is just what he needs.

From United he's been sent out on loan to Sheffield United, Preston North End, Portsmouth and Norwich City. The Portsmouth move being the only one to have given him the chance to get a good amount of games. He's an international, having made two appearances for Belgium and will be looking to get what looked like a promising career back on track.

Matty James will be joining him at Leicester City and the utility player will also want the boost a move can make to his career. James has also been out to Preston North End on loan and the 20 year old has represented England at various age restricted levels.

Although these are two quite low profile sales, it shows an intention that United want to get their summer business sorted as soon as possible.

Quote:With season drawing to a close and given the position we are it is the time when people point fingers at us over the mistakes that we did over the past 37 games. But no one is going to look at the positives; well I am here to do exactly that.

We are six points ahead of where we were when we won the season last year; we won it with a lead of nine points. To be where we are with one game to go is a huge achievement. Yes we are behind city but only by goal difference.

So, here are my five positives I was glad to see this season.

Away Form

The first thing that strikes me about this season is how much we have improved from last season. After winning just 5 games last season, to be the club with the best away record in the league is some achievement. We have never been good against London opponents and this season it completely changed as we lost just two points in London and that was against Chelsea where we came back from 3-0 down. We have scored 36 goals away from compared to last season’s 29; we conceded 25 goals last season though. So it is safe to say whatever happens tomorrow we will still be the club with the best away record in the league this year.

Shining Academy Talent

With Ferdinand injured during the early part of the season and Vidic being ruled out for the rest of the season before Christmas someone had to step in and boy oh boy Jonny Evans did that perfectly. I accept the fact that it was a stupid red card against city in the 1-6 defeat but apart from that he has been spotless. He has kept the lights of Smalling and Jones at bay. His consistency is impressive given the fact he started only a handful of games before this season.

A lot of people may not agree with me about Danny Welbeck added to this along with Evans, but to be fair to Danny he has scored 9 goals this season so far just one behind United’s second highest goals scorer, Javier Hernandez. He has been at times rash and has missed several chances, but he has linked up with Rooney better than any of the other partners Rooney’s had this season. Given the playing time he has had this season he will only get better in the future.

Wayne Rooney

Just over a year ago he wanted to leave the club and now he’s the top scorer for the club scoring more than twice as much as Hernandez has scored for the club. What a transformation it has been, he has been immaculate for the red devils this season. He has scored twenty six goals this season only 4 behind Van Persie, he only scored 11 last season’s controversial and injury plagued season. Rooney’s contribution to the team has not only been through the goals but he has matured and has taken up a senior role in the team and has driven the team forward during difficult times. The Chelsea game and the goal he scored against Athletic Bilbao in a losing cause epitomises how well he has transformed this season. He will always be United’s favourite Evertonian.

Our Wingers

Manchester United has always been famous for width with which play and this season is exception. Having one world class winger is a gift but having four is something else. Although Ryan Giggs did not play a lot on the flanks this season the rest have done an exceptional job running riot towards opposition fullbacks. It all looked bleak at the beginning of the season as Nani was the established winger we had and Young was new and Valencia was coming back from a horrific injury. How well they have played is credit to them individually and credit to Sir Alex for using them appropriately.

The trio has scored 20 goals and have setup 30 more; that in itself is almost half of what United has scored this season. They have been exceptional this season and they are all still young and they all have the potential to become Manchester United Legends.

Special mention to Antonio Valencia, he has the most assists for a United player just one behind David Silva of City in the overall standings. While Young and Nani traded places on the left flank Valencia has been impeccable on the right and the goal against Blackburn showed he is by far the powerful person we have going forward.

Ageless Wonders:

Yes, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes. Enough has been said and written about these two and their impact they have had on this young United side. It would have been highly inappropriate if I didn’t add them. I just had to mention them as a positive you people probably know why.

“3 times we’ve won it and once we have lost the title on the last day” says Sir Alex. We can still win the league, hopefully with so much positives we deserve the league title. Win or lose we are Manchester United and we will never die.

Manchester United legend Roy Keane has urged his former club to sign a 'big-hitter' this summer and believes Tottenham's Gareth Bale would be the ideal player.

Keane said yesterday that it could be a good thing if United lose their Premier League crown this season as it would convince the club's owners to invest in new signings.

Quote:“Maybe if they lose the league it won’t be a bad thing,” Keane told the Daily Telegraph. “They may say ‘listen, we may have to reinvest again’."

And, writing in his column for The Sun today, Keane has named three such players he thinks would be great additions to United's squad.

Quote:"The one I’d really want from Spurs is Bale. It will be tough getting him but they’ve got to try.

"Like Bale, Ribery is someone who could slot straight in but will he want to come? He’s at a club one game away from winning the Champions League and I think he’s said before that if he leaves Bayern he wants to go to Spain.

"We all think these players are desperate to play in the Premier League but that’s not necessarily the case.

"Bayern have the clout to match United financially, so it’s a question of whether a player fancies a different challenge.

"The same goes for Schweinsteiger. He mightn’t be great on the eye but he’s a midfield enforcer who seems like a good lad."

What is the remedy for Manchester United? The 19 time champions of England are coming to the end of a season where their every effort in all cup competitions has fell short of the required level. The league now looks to be out of their control after the defeat to Manchester City and the team that Sir Alex Ferguson put out for the derby clash looked set up for the sole purpose of chasing; chasing the ball, chasing the opposition, chasing the title. The decision to drop Young, Welbeck and Valencia seemed for all sense and purposes to be negative and is one that was not implemented with goal scoring in mind.

City were balanced as they have been for the most part in this season and their play deserved the win. The ball would not stick for United up front even more so than has been the case in their previous matches this season and the onus was with Wayne Rooney to produce a goal, but the reliance on the same one man to do the all important job is clearly too much.

United fans have grown more and more frustrated because the front men are unable to hold up the ball enough for others to play off them, it is not good enough.

Game after game their team are content to hold the ball deep in defence and midfield in a very pedestrian style, the scoring opportunities do arrive from wide areas and of course they are always welcome also but where is the legendary ‘Plan B’.

Athletic Bilbao and Fernando Llorente showed exactly what United cannot do to win a game and brushed them aside with ease.

The goal getting needs to be shared more equally, the team need some more creativity just in behind the strike force too. These problems can be easily solved, and the rest of the squad is strong – the team always have dangerous elements it’s just an issue of implementing them. In attack United have Rooney as the most technically gifted but then after him they have Chicharito whose game is based solely around his speed and reactions, and Welbeck whose game is based around his athleticism. Berbatov is clearly a technically sound player but his scarce involvement is of good use to nobody, if Ferguson does not intend to use him then he MUST be sold.

The performances of Llorente and the manic form of Edinson Cavani (both of a good age and standing easily over six feet tall) can surely have not gone unnoticed by Old Trafford’s evergreen Scotsman.

Fergie is a stubborn old grouch and when he digs his heels in he means to get his own way regardless of any other opinion, for better or for worse as the history of Old Trafford mainstays and untimely departures will give evidence to. The age of Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs coupled with the career crippling illness of Darren Fletcher have got to be pressing issues, whilst youth and exuberance are rife in other areas the centre of midfield is looking more and more like an episode of Dad’s Army (Michael Carrick having played like an OAP since the age of 23).

United need to find answers and fast if they are to prevent future seasons going the way of this one, the list of people looking for reasons to criticise Manchester United – players, fans and manager – is growing at an alarming rate.

Quote:JI-SUNG Park is battling to save his Manchester United career.

The South Korean, 31, signed a contract extension last summer that ties him to the champions until the end of next season, but he is set to become surplus to requirements at the end of the campaign.

The midfielder is unlikely to be offered another new deal, with United boss Sir Alex Ferguson keen to sell him rather than see him leave for nothing in 2013.

Park has struggled to make an impact this season and hold down a regular place in Fergie’s starting line-up.

His shock return for Monday’s derby defeat to Manchester City was his first league start for three months and he looked well off the pace.

Whether United manage to pip the Blues to the title or not, Fergie is keen to strengthen his ageing side and Park will be one of the casualties.

Meanwhile, Nemanja Vidic’s agent has rubbished reports linking the injured United captain with a summer move to Juventus.

Vidic, 30, is recovering from a serious knee ligament injury and Fergie is desperate to have his Serbian centre-half back for next season.

Agent Silvano Martina said: “A future in Italy? He has a non-EU passport and that would make it difficult for him to arrive in Serie A.

“I can assure you that I have never spoken with Juventus about Nemanja.”

The reserves clinched the northern title again, with a fine win away to Newcastle United:

Quote:United came from three goals down to slam six goals past Newcastle and clinch the Barclays Premier Reserve League North title in style. Will Keane led the way by netting four times to take his domestic tally for the season to 16 in 23 games with Davide Petrucci and makeshift forward Ritchie De Laet also getting in on the act in the second half.

The Reds looked determined to make light work of the task from the start with Will Keane forcing Jak Alnwick into a flying save with an ambitious drive and Jesse Lingard lobbing too close to the keeper after being put in the clear by Marnick Vermijl's excellent pass.

But the Magpies fired a warning when a Brad Inman cross went dangerously across goal and the Australian grabbed the opener with a simple tap-in from a Phil Airey cross despite initially looking offside. Lingard could not get any power into his shot after a barnstorming run down the left by De Laet and Larnell Cole fired wide of an empty net from distance after Alnwick came out to meet Will Keane with a vital tackle outside the box.

Disaster struck when Ezekiel Fryers was adjudged to have handled a ball that appeared to hit his chest and Airey slipped the penalty past Sam Johnstone with ease. Six minutes later, Dan Taylor was left unmarked to head home at the far post following some fine play by Michael Richardson to make it 3-0.

After Richardson blazed over a chance to score himself, home skipper Jeff Henderson picked up an elbow injury that seemed to have a negative effect on the defence. A clever backheel by Davide Petrucci was pounced upon by Will Keane, who showed his pace and buried a firm low finish.

56 seconds later, the England Under-21 international latched onto a Lingard pass and slammed a wonderful finish past Alnwick to bring United right back into the game. Some wasteful free-kicks ruined any hope of restoring parity before the break but Fryers had to make a saving tackle to thwart Airey in time added on.

A tactical masterstroke from Warren Joyce, switching De Laet into attack after replacing Cole with Tom Thorpe, helped wreak havoc in the Tynesiders' backline. A great break, fuelled by Will Keane's touch, allowed De Laet to trade passes with Petrucci and put the ball on a plate for Will Keane to bag his hat-trick.

Newcastle regained some control but had no answer to the Reds' pace and fluency. De Laet's speed took him through again and, although he couldn't tee up Will Keane again, the striker retrieved the ball for Lingard to feed Petrucci, who showed clever feet inside the box to wriggle clear and supply a classy finish.

Despite the scoreline, both keepers pulled off some wonderful saves - Johnstone thwarting Inman and Airey with diving stops and Alnwick making one spellbinding save from Petrucci and also denying De Laet in a one-on-one situation. But Will Keane gave Alnwick no chance when rounding the home No1 after running onto a long ball forward by Petrucci to roll in his fourth of the night with his left foot.

And De Laet got the goal his play deserved when exchanging passes with Lingard and sprinting clear of the defence again to this time get the better of the unprotected Alnwick to clip home number six. It was the Belgian's last real contribution after picking up a knock but the Reds continued to flood forward and only another smart save kept out a Petrucci curler before the captain and goal-hungry Will Keane fired wide as the champions hunted a seventh. Will Keane also forced an injury-time save out of the beleaguered Alnwick but had to settle for four goals in the end.

Joyce's team, who have enjoyed a magnificent campaign and won the title with four games to spare, will face Aston Villa, the Southern section winners, in the grand final at this level with the date obviously still to be confirmed.

United: Johnstone; Vermijl, M.Keane, Fryers, De Laet (Fornasier 79); Cole (Thorpe 51), Tunnicliffe, Petrucci, Pogba, Lingard (Blackett 87); W.Keane. Subs not used: Coll, Giverin.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says that a team-bonding trip to famous Scottish golf course St Andrews has helped his side in the Premier League title race.

Ferguson's side were knocked out of both the FA Cup and the Europa League in a short space of time and took the chance to visit his homeland and play a few rounds, a move that developed their bond further.

Quote:"They've done well, the lads, the little trip we had to St Andrews was fantastic," Ferguson told The Sun. "I didn't play and I'm glad because there are some bandits at our club. There's no chance you can win. The players loved it. On the Friday about half a dozen of them had nine holes.

"It helped with the unity of the players - it was a good moment for us. It makes you realise when players stay together, they become a team very easily."

Meanwhile, veteran defender Rio Ferdinand insists that when he does decide to leave the club, he wants to do so on a high now his time in the game is inching towards its conclusion.

Quote:''There are not many players who leave this club doing exactly what they want to do,'' he said. "'It wouldn't be good finishing your career with a loss, or by not winning something.

''The losses now do my head in. To think I wouldn't be able to rectify it the season after because I had retired or left would rankle.

"I am not thinking about retirement. I am trying to play as long as I can. I have another year after this and I want to do another ten. But whenever it is, I would want to go out on a high note.''
